I'm planning on being Columbia from Rocky Horror Picture Show for a charity bowling event. Any ideas on how to make this costume. I find more fun in making my costumes than just going to a store a buying one.

I don't think some of you are getting what I'm asking. I've got my costume idea. I just want ideas as to how to make it.

Well if you are going to sew one. Do you have the material? That’s the biggest issue.

The shorts…..
If you are do you have shorts of your own that is just like the type she wears? Use that as a pattern, take wrapping paper or a paperback to make the pattern, allow at least 1 inch more around to be the area to sew it together. If you have black shorts add ribbon or paint strips

The over coat……
If you have a sweater that opens out front, use that as a template on the coat pattern cut it out. You don’t always have to get an actual sewing pattern to make the costume if your good at looking at any garment to see how it’s put together.

The top ……
The top you can make a wrap around like you would a halter. At your chest take some elastic and make a gather to give the chest a bunched top look. Looking at some of the people who have dressed like her. They are just wearing a women black string strap slip top.

Bow tie….
The bow tie ask a male friend if they have one that color, or go to the wal-mart sewing department for red wide ribbon and make a bow tie that way.

The hat
Now the hat it will be a bit difficult. You could get an old hat from a thrift store that is similar. Or go to the kids toy department and see if they have a plastic one like it or a party store. They always carry new years hats, To make one you could also try the same pattern used for present Lincoln hates that kids make for school or a leprecon hat design for st. Patrick’s day. One way is to use a old coffee can as the top part. Cover with paper or cardboard especially it has ridges. The trim of the hat, Get a piece of sturdy cardboard and make a trace of the can round end way. Cut that circle out and them shape the out part as you think the trim of the hat would be. Try to bend the edges a little. Slide it over the main base part of the hat and when it’s at the bottom either tape or hot glue the edge to the can. Take stray starch to soak it then add allot of gold colored glitter. I really mean allot. When the spray starch dries it is like glue. You can also use this cardboard and can frame. Add wax paper over the fame you made do that the frame can slide out of it. Paper mache the can and trim till it forms the hat you want, allow the frame to be able to slide out, and don’t cover the underside of it. But make sure it’s thick and strong. Use liquid bottle stray starch instead of flour paste. It won’t spoil or fall apart as easy. Let it dry, add gold spray paint to make it solid, helps from having to put way to much glitter when its also sprayed gold, then use the spray starch again as a glue method for the gold glitter. The black strap on the hat is simple wide black ribbon.

The best place to get cheap material is wal-mart. They have 1 To 2 dollar a yard material.

I know you don’t want to buy the whole costume, but you could also save money and time if you checked for each piece at thrift store. If they have pants in the strip style that fits you, you can cut them to the shorts. Even check men and women’s pajama pants.

The stocking and socks just purchase unless you already own that. The white makeup can be baby powder or the white face makeup.

How good are you at sewing? Can you make your own patterns? I would trace a pair of shorts that fit you, and trace them to get your base pattern. Then you can adjust the length and such. If you can't find fabric exactly like you need, you can sew on ribbons (or stitch witchery) and such to give it the effect you want. Sewing the top shouldn't be too hard, but finding the fabric you like might. You just need a front a back, or tube shape for the top, so I'd say trace a tank-top you have and make another patter. The jacket may give you some trouble, but look at a suit jacket for inspiration or a dress shirt even. Remember to add the tails. It might be easier just to buy the hat, but you can always add a lot of glitter to one you have already if you want!

^You might have to scroll down a little.

It looks like black shorts with different colored ribbon sewed down the front, over fishnets. Blue socks and high heeled Mary Janes. The gold sequiny fabric can be found at walmart. I don't know if you can sew, but sewing the tube top is easy, just a tube. If you can sew then you could get a pattern like this one: http://store.sewingtoday.com/cgi-bin/voguepatterns/shop.cgi?s.item.V2855=x&TI=20005&page=4 . Then glue that fabric on the hat. And get some in red too, for the bowtie.

Are you a handy at sewing? It may be cheapter to go to a thrift store or salvation army store and purchase a long sports jacket; cut and sew into tux jacket with tails. Buy a spool of stringed sequin trim or loose sequins...http://www.trimfabric.com/sequin-trim.html and glue them on a top hat and bow tie Or look for some glitter gel...http://www.topcostumes.com/as12glgel.html A tank top or danskin body shirt would work. Shorts or not? Add fish net stockings, and/or white socks, tap shoes, feather boa and some make and you are done...look at pictures...http://imdb.com/gallery/ss/0073629/Ss/0073629/1?path=gallery&path_key=0073629 http://imdb.com/name/nm0132752/photogallery
