My dad just had this problem with his knee. The doctor diagnosed him with tendinitis. He was put on Purkaset (terrible spelling of pain-killer drug) and and had to do four weeks of under water physical therapy. The pain was so bad that he was pretty much bed-ridden for days. After proper treatment however, he is back to normal. Have the doctors do a tendinitis test.

Hope you feel better.

Yes it is good to use it, but make sure you do easy moves and probably not throw the football fo a while. The reason for using it is because when muscle tend to get sore the usually have a build up of lactic acid and if you don't move it, it will not flush out. What also can be the cause is a build up of toxins in your body and it is being dumped into your joints. There are other ways to flush it out like you can soak it in hot water with epsonsalt, and take potassium, magnesium and coral calcium. You will also want to drink a ton of water and you probably want go to the local health food store and find a detoxing kit to help detoxify you body. Finally you are going to want to gently massage to muscles around the joint (make sure you don't massage the joint itself because that will do no good). When you do these things your arm should come right back.

rest it while its hurting, and try using it gently when it feel ok so that you cna strengthen those muscles. Ice it. try to find an ice pack the you can wrap around the whole area and wrap a tensor bandage around it to add some compression...but not too tight. Leave the ice on until its numb. C-BAN (cold, burn, ache, numb) thats a rule of iceing anything. Take the ice off until your skin is normal colour and temp again then you can put it back on if you want. For sleeping, compression is often comforting, so you can wrap the arm, but not to tight, make sure not to cut off circulation. Try taking an anti-inflammatory like advil or motrin, ibuprofin is preferable to acetaminophen because of its antiinflammatory properties.
Good luck, I hope you get some reliefe.

Insist on an X-ray. If you have insurance it shouldn't be a problem.
