The Emancipation Proclamation didn't legally end slavery-- that was the 13th Amendment, which was ratified in December, 1865. Lincoln had died in April of that year.

But, the 13th Amendment was passed by Congress before Lincoln's death. In fact, he signed the amendment the day it was passed by the House-- something that's not required. And, 21 (of 27 required) states had ratified the 13th Amendment by the time of his death.

Also, lots of slaves were effectively freed during Lincoln's presidency. Slaves who escaped to the North were no longer returned to owners in the South. And, as Union armies advanced through the South, they freed slaves along their routes. Etc.

President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, to free all slaves in those areas under the military control of the Confederate States of America (CSA). Lincoln's idea was that the slaves would rise up and help defeat the CSA. Many former slaves did fight for the Union. The Emancipation Proclamation did not free the slaves in the Union controlled slave states (Kentucky, Missouri, Maryland, Delaware, and West Virginia) because Lincoln feared that slave owners in those states might be incited to actively fight the Union.

Two years later, President Lincoln proposed an amendment to the United States Constitution to permanently abolish slavery. Slavery was finally eradicated in the United States when the Thirteenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States was ratified by the State of Georgia on December 6, 1865, nearly eight months after Lincoln was assassinated.

Lincoln was more immediately interested in preserving the Union than in liberating the slaves, but with good reason. Had the CSA succeeded in winning independence for the slave states, slavery would, most likely, still be alive and thriving in North America.

Ultimately, the slaves of the United States liberated themselves by demonstrating their inherent worth as human beings, but, racist or not, Abraham Lincoln accomplished more than any other American to hasten that liberation.

Because some black people have ancestors from the Rebel south. Lincoln freed the slaves in the rebel south because they were, well, rebelling. However, as you said, he didn't free slaves in the Union states because he wanted to keep his union states on his side and the white citizens happy. so there you go, some slaves were freed by lincoln

Hope that helps

Lincoln set the stage for freeing black men and women even if in the south they were still slaves. In the north they were citizens of the US.

I think its because they get confused because It ended in 1863-64 with Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation; but it legally ended with the Thirteenth amendment of 1865.

It is simply the way commonly known history was written and taught. Given the current circumstances in our country nobody gives a **** whether it is true or not. Find a different flag to burn, you're wasting your time.

Is there anything black people don't complain about? My whole family was the victim of a black criminal at one time or another in our lives. Should I write articles about it? Why do you have so many black only things, like TV station, magazines, award shows, colleges, etc.. Sounds pretty racist to me.
