The movie Glory is based on the 54th Mass. regiment, a "colored" unit that fought for the North in the Civil War.

There were Blacks who fought for both the Southern and Northern causes. Yes, there were Southern rebel soldiers.

Blacks who fought for the South were often compelled to do so. Others fought because they were promised freedom if the South was victorious. Still others believed that they were fighting to preserve "their" way of life, a phrase they picked up from their masters.

In the North soldiers fought to do their part to free the slaves and to prove that Black soldiers were equal to or in some cases superior to white soldiers in fighting skills and courage.

The 54th was the first group of Black soldiers tested in a major battle. Their courage opened the door for others over the years, some of whom in the West became known as Buffalo soldiers.

They wanted to fight for the side which would give them emancipation. And, isn't it better to be a soldier than a slave? Of course, they weren't treated very well there, either, but at least they felt they had a chance there, a position which could gain them even a shred of respect.

Many people of colour felt just as strongly about the war as white people. Why wouldn't they? Everyone's heart is the same colour!
