do a search online for pruning. there are sites that will show where and how to cut and how far back to prune.

the Royal Horticultural Society (UK) ran an experiment with one hedge being carefully cut with secateurs and the other just run across with a hedge trimmer. By the next summer there was no difference. The only thing is the pleasure you get from tending your plants and for a while in the spring the trimmed hedge looks a bit rough.
