i'm sure not all american youngsters like oldies, and not all japanese youngsters dislike japanese old songs.
it's just a matter of individual preference.
i don't know what kind of japanese old songs you're talking about, and i'm also not familiar with japanese songs in general, but
perhaps japanese old songs are just not as popular as say Frank Sinatra and the like.

Maybe some of them lived in restrictive households and are rebelling against the norm just like every person does when they feel like they were being forced to do things. I know some of the songs my parents listened to, I don't like and vice versa. Also, times change. People change. Tastes change. That's just how it is. There are still Japanese young people that like the traditional songs.

If you have already asked them if they like old songs, and they replied 'No', why didn't you do the followup, which would have been to respond, "Why?"
There's no point in asking me why a young Japanese person doesn't like old Japanese music. I can guess, but as I'm not a young Japanese person, there's not much point to it.

because amaerican old songs, as you put it are not muchg different from new ones if you look at it closely... while japanese old songs ar VERY different... the now young ones are the first pop generation of japan... they have no traditions, no oldies... only things of a kind they REALLY dont want to have to deal with...
think of it as if everything from 1900 to 1980 had never happened. not only musicwise but also theater, arts, books... would you like to have to deal with anything older than 25 years?
