You can put a gorge in a canyon but you can't put a canyon in a gorge.

A gorge is smaller then a canyon and a gorge can be made in a few hours and a canyon takes a vary long time to make, many hundreds or even thousands of years it would take to make a canyon. it is all caused by erosion.water, air .etc.

I think of a gorge as being very closed and somewhat rugged and a canyon as being more open. However, the Columbia River Gorge isn't very closed or rugged and the Bryce River Canyon is rather closed and rugged. Go figure.
