I was in Chicago on January 15, 1989, Downtown, and it was 15 degrees below zero, and that was a record for that date. Yes they use salt.

Yeah they use salt to deice the roads (so does Detroit and it makes a lot of slush). But salt doesn't work below 10 degrees F. That's why up at school here in Sault Ste. Marie, MI they just use sand in an attempt to make the roads gritty and provide traction.

Yes it gets below 0, They salt the roads so heavy the roads are white and cars kick up a white salt cloud at times.....Yuk
