these words (or, ah, close approximations of them) are generally better known as, "bibliomania".

"The term bibliomania is used to describe an obsessive-compulsive disorder involving the collecting of books to the point where social relations or health are damaged. One of several psychological disorders associated with books, bibliomania is characterized by the collecting of books which have no use to the collector nor any great intrinsic value to a genuine book collector. The purchase of multiple copies of the same book and edition and the accumulation of books beyond possible capacity of use or enjoyment are frequent symptoms of bibliomania.

Bibliomania is not to be confused with bibliophilia, which is the legitimate love of books and is not considered a clinical psychological disorder.

Other abnormal or condemned behaviours involving books include book-eating (bibliophagy), compulsive book-stealing, book-burying, and book-burning.

Examples

* Mel Gibson's character in the movie Conspiracy Theory suffers from bibliomania, making him buy a copy of J.D. Salinger's Catcher In The Rye every time he goes outside his apartment." - wikipedia.com

why books? why anything? why do drinkers drink and smokers smoke? they derive psychological and physical (even, sometimes, in bibliomania) satisfaction from the behaviours. i, for instance, love books more than many people. it's difficult to explain the whys of mental illness - though calling bibliomania a psychological disorder may be a bit harsh, excepting bibliophagy, and the like. the milder forms of bibliomania are, at least, not injurious to the health (though, like many manias, they might wipe out one's bank account).
