I am on my second Toyota Corolla, and, quite apart from no problems (Isuppose I should say 'yet', but this is 5 years now without problems), both have done 46mpg for me. I have even got 52mpg on a steady run in an empty car. They have both been 1.4 petrol and I do most of my travelling to and from work; about 40 miles per day.

You could look at the Toyota Aygo if it's big enough - £40.00 per year road tax!

In Europe it will be the 1.4 diesel 5-door versions of the:
Toyota Aygo
Citroën C1 and
Peugeot 107.

The three cars are nearly identical - just the badges, bumpers and lamps differentiate the Peugeot and Citroën versions, while the Toyota has more major styling differences but is still the same car under the skin. I don't know which is the most economical but my wife bough a Honda Jazz 1.2 when we had our first child and it despite what the brochure says and multiple garages looking at it it does the most appallingly small distance on a tank. On a straight motorway run through France and Spain we were getting no more than 450km to a 40L tank. I hope you do better than we did!

Toyota Scion Xb, i bought one last year and its terrific, its HUGE inside, the back seats fold down so you have tons of room to loads stuff in, it gets 35mpg, and people ask me about it everywhere i go, and toyota is known for there dependability, it was in the top 5 list in consumer reports for most reliable compact car, i researched it before i bought it, good luck!

Well i have a KIA and that's very good but I had a Fiat Uno for a very short time on loan ( I think that was the name).That was unbelievably good on petrol.
