A much better question is: why did Sony not use these batteries in their own products? Did they know they were junk and would cause millions to loose confidence in their major competitors product.

That is the weirdest conspiracy theory ever. The batteries were made by Sony and are in a bunch of other laptop brands. Sony knows what they did wrong in the original battery manufacturing and is not making ones like those anymore so the replacements will be OK.
Did you ever consider that maybe the astronauts up in space now were ordered by Al Qieda to blow up the International Space Station in such a way that the burning embers come down and light up the sky with a message like "Death to Great Satan." That would make about as much sense as what you said.

How do we know the old ones wouldn't explode on a certain date? Maybe the al Qaeda plot was found out and the DHS did the recall. Apple had the same recall for its batteries.

What, the original batteries were supposed to all catch on fire at the same time? Al Qaeda has infiltrated Sony. Probably explains the DRM problem a few months back too.

Oh yea, for sure. You know what you should do to protect yourself when they all explode? Buy a giant body condom and wear it 24/7. So when they all explode at the same time-even though every laptop wont have any connection to the net or phone systems to trigger the bomb- youll be safe!

It has nothing to do with Al Qieda.

There was a simple problem with the batteries that COULD cause them to overheat and burts into flames. Once they found out, they sent out the recall.
