You could go for the old school gangster look. The pinstripe zoot suit, with the fedora and cane. Dont forget the chain coming from the pocket too! And some black and white wing tipped shoes. You can rent this outfit at any wedding or prom store.

Why don't you take it a notch above being a street thug, and dress as an Italian gangster from the 50' and 60's? This way you'll have an excuse to wear the flashy suit, hat, shoes, etc. Carry a fake hand gun to enhance the effect. You can use the movies as a reference as to your attire. That's going to be one of the spiffiest costumes there, buddy! That's a great idea!

You are creating difficulties with your restrictions.

You wish to go as a gangster so I assume you want to be recognized as such. If no one "gets" your costume, then what is the point? It is precisely those stereotypes you need to capture the visual essence of what is a gangster.

First, what kind of gangster? A modern street hoodlum with a "do rag" (bandana) wrapped around his head, tatoos of knives and skulls all over bare arms, baggy pants and expensive running shoes?

Or an old-fashioned, roaring 20's, Chicago or New York, Prohibition era gangster, with pinstripe suit, wide lapels, black shirt, loud tie and slouch hat with brim pulled down low, pencil-thin mustache.

It is these stereotypes that visually define the character.

Yep, it really is correct - we are going as some prior Queens :-) and also off to at least one this weekend - as Virgil from Thunderbirds - who apparantly I do have more effective than a passing resemblance to. (might want to be the interest brows and plastic personality)
