GBS is a very common condition. It's a bacteria that can live in your body. A lot of moms are diagnosed GBS+ during their pregnancies. You won't have any symptoms at all, so this is why they suggest all women be tested. (Something like 50% are carriers! It is VERY common so don't feel bad!)

BUT...if it is passed to baby at birth it can be very dangerous. Thankfully, it's easy to prevent by having IV antibiotics in labor. Make sure that when you go to the hospital, you tell the nurses you are GBS+ right away (and it should be in your chart too, but it's good to make sure it's not overlooked). They will get you started on antibiotics and all will be fine.

I was GBS- with my first and GBS+ with babies #2 and #3. (GBS can come and go. Just because you test positive at one point in your PG does NOT mean you will still be positive when you give birth!) I didn't get antibiotics with #2 because my labor was too fast. My water stayed in tact and was broken by my MW during the pushing stage. Laboring with your bag in tact and keeping vaginal exams to a minimum will help to prevent passing the infection. I did get antibiotics in labor with my third as there was enough time. Both babies were perfectly fine.

I tested negative for my first pregnancy and this time around I tested positive and found out at my last dr. visit. They just give you anitibiotics in your IV. I did some reasearch on my own too and read that if it goes untreated you have 1-400 chance of passing it on to your baby but if you get the antibiotics you have 1-4000 chance. It is serious if the baby does get contaminated and can cause all kinds of problems of which I will not go into details as I dont want you to get worried. But knowing the chances are so low of anything happening I dont think there should be anything to worry about. If you want more detailed info, just do a yahoo search for strep b and you will learn more than you want to know about the subject.

When I was pregnant I tested negative for GSB so was not given any treatment for it. However when my daughter was born (by c-section mind you) she tested positive. She had another medical condition that effects the lungs as well so I can't say which caused what. What was explained to me, was GBS was absolutely harmless in adults and most people won't even know they are a carrier of it unless they get pregnant. It's passed from the mom to the baby in the birth canal. It has some effect on the baby's lungs. Like I said I can't say which problems my daughter had came from the GBS, so I won't go into detail.

If this is the routine strep test they do on all pregnant women, and it came out positive then it is okay. :) My friend tested positive for this also, and the only difference is that you will be on antibiotics through an IV during labor and delivery. The antibiotics are given to protect your baby from getting strep while passing through your birth canal. Your baby will be fine.

Good luck!

No problem...all they have to do is give you a shot a certain time before you deliver so it isn't passed through the baby...its a common thing in women to have B strep.

98-99% of all babies born to infected mothers will not become infected, if treated. Of those who become infected few will have any problems with the treatment for the infection. There are two types of infections: early and late.

Early infections tend to occur usually within the first six hours after birth, and most by the seventh day of life. This infection can cause inflammation of the baby's lungs, spinal cord or brain.

group b strep is just a bacetria that is in the vagina while you are pregnant. If you test positive for it they will just give you some antibiotics in your IV during delievery. It's not a big deal at all..
