In Belgium, they do take away your civil rights, including the right to vote or to be able to take a job as a civil servant. That much I do know.

Your civil rights can not be taken away by the goverment but only by the department of justice (by a judge)

Special interest groups have been temporarily taking away our civil rights by means of Congress for many years, unfortunately what is lost is seldom returned and becomes a complacent part of American society. The line item veto would resolve this issue, which would not allow Special interest lobby to attach their wishes to the end of other important legislation. It would allow the President to veto only certain parts of a bill, allowing the bill to pass to serve it's original purpose. Here is how it works here, Special Interest lobbyist write legislation and get congressmen and senators to support the bill in congress. The President approves or disapproves once the bill passes congress, but congress can overturn his veto with a two-thirds majority vote and pass the bill anyway. The Supreme Court then reviews the legislation to insure it does not violate our Constitution or conflict with any other laws. It seems to be a good checks and balances system, but lawyers in our country are very skilled at finding loopholes in the laws which allow them to bypass the system occasionally. But no system is perfect, except God's plan.

In the United States, civil rights are those basic rights that are granted to all people, such as freedoms to speak, worship, live, have privacy, etc. When our government is said to take away civil rights, the statement is referring to the government's illegal act of denying citizens their constitutional rights. A great example is the post-9/11 Patriot Act, which allows the government to illegally invade on the privacy of innocent Americans without a search warrant granted by a judge. And by naming it the "Patriot" Act, it is implying that disagreement with the measure is un-patriotic. Lovely.

Interesting question. I'm in the United States and some citizens lose the right to vote if they are convicted felons, however, this isn't temporary -- it's permanent.

Under the current administration (and the Patriot Act), there are many of us who feel that our "civil rights" have been taken away -- and not just on a temporary basis.
