You need to bleach the garment to remove has much of the previous color has you can.

Then you need to wash the garment thoroughly to remove all traces of bleach.

I recommend washing twice to avoid the bleach ruining the dye job.

Then dye the garment following the dye manufacturers instructions.

Try plain old bleach. I've accidentally turned one of my black shirts brown with bleach. Don't ask.

first you have to bleach the garment to remove as much color as possible, maybe even twice. then go about the dying process as usual.
