Two parents (i think) and 3 small children living in a one bedroom apartment. My new neighbors. The kids i guess play on the balcony during the day (i have seen them out there when I go home at lunch time and when I get home from work), then they play in the hallway between the apartments for a couple of hours at night. I cant stand to hear screaming kids.

These are EXPENSIVE apartments, they could go live somewhere else and get a larger apartment, so it is by choice that they are living there.

Howard, there are reasons they have rules regarding how many people can be in a building.

Also, I dont spy on them, I walk right in front of their balcony to get to my apartment, and I dont have to peek at them in the hall way I CAN HEAR THEM SCREAMING and running around.

Also, if I wanted to play with kids, I would have some of my own, but I dont.

Like I said Julianna, thanks again for just making assumptions about me. And there are REASONS that there are only so many people allowed in a building.

I would guess they don't have much money to cram into that size apartment, and I would say try your best to tolerate it, because it is probably not by choice that the parents are there, and I guess it is better than having their kids play in the streets.

I feel for you, though - you could try talking politely to the parents, maybe, to see if they could at least limit the play to no later than eight o'clock or something like that.

If that doesn't work, you could ask the landlord to intervene.

p.s. If these are expensive apartments it is possible they are getting some kind of section 8 or other gov't assistance to pay for it.

Have sympathy. I'm sure they're there temporarily and would much rather offer their kids a bigger home if they could. What other's think is secondary to them.

It's a good reason to appreciate the fortune you have for not being in the same predicament.

Best thing to do would be start a conversation with your neighbors and voice out your problems (because I do agree that it is an inconvenience for you and it is a valid complaint), then come up with some sort of compromise with them about the noise the children create (eg: a curfew for playing).

You are on the right track to be asking for advice.

I would be frustrated knowing that those kids are not being properly taken care of or parented. If they are going to allow them to play in the hallway they should be making sure they are not disturbing other tennants. If this remains a problem I would suggest calling child welfare and having them make sure everything is ok there, and have them talk to the parents about the complaint.

Most apartment complexes have a rule about renting to families with several kids. Like only two boys to a room, and a separate room for girls. Maybe the landlord is working with them because it is all they can afford presently.
