American Civil Liberties Union. It's a non-partisan group dedicated to defending the civil liberties of all Americans and protecting and upholding the Constitution. They often will provide legal advice or even lawyers to individuals whose civil liberties have been infringed.

While bereal1's examples are indisputable and regrettable, it remains that the goal of the ACLU is to defend the Bill of Rights for you and me and everyone. One of the prices we all get to pay for freedom is that you don't just get to trot out the Bill of Rights only when it is defending something you agree with. If the document has any validity at all, it can't be used selectively. Someday something each of us think is "normal" will be under attack by the gov't and then we'll be happy the ACLU is there.
bereal1--this isn't a place to have a personal conversation about it, but...clearly you missed my point. I agree with you that those things are not normal and should not be defended--the ACLU is far from perfect. That doesn't mean both you and I won't be happy that the ACLU is around someday when a personal freedom we care about is under attack. And sorry, "Christmas" was the winter solstice holiday long before it was about the birth of Jesus. You can look it up.

Here are a few things the ACLU has done to "help" the freedoms of our citizens:
in 2004 ACLU filed a brief with the Kansas Supreme Crt. on the behalf of an eighteen yr. old that brutally raped a mentally handicapped 14yr.old boy. Their report said that any child over the age of 13 can give consent..(guess it doesn't matter if you're a victim)
To Mark M; I don't see how rape is a right.. I also don't understand why ACLU wants Christmas -Which is and always will be and always should be ,because its our celebration of the Birth of Jesus Christ-ACLU agreed to represent (for free for the next 2 yrs) the North American Man/Boy Love Association, but only after two of the groups members were arrest for the rape and murder of a 10yr old boy.
There are plenty more of these stories.
ACLU has sued to prevent graduation prayers,remove 10 commandment displ.,remove crosses from war memorials, ban nativity scenes,opposed laws which protect children from on line pornography,fight schools teaching Intelligent design and abstinence prior to marriage.
Oh and by the way in most of the time its the people of the US that are forced to pay for the ACLU s countless lawsuits..Here read for yourself.....

the aclu gives a man the right to walk down the street at 3 am. and not be stopped by the police questioned and searched or arrested .AS long as he has proper Identification and a drug sniffing dog does not alert on him or he acts in a suspicious manner .
This makes it hard for some people of color to walk free in our free society .
If it were not for the aclu many of us would feel the pinch of our police state and not just the minority's.

The ACLU fights to make sure no ones rights are ever taken away. Sometimes the people/organizations they defend are what most would consider bad. They aren't in the position of judging, just defending their rights.

American Civil Liberties Union. They've been tagged as liberals, but if you look at their track record they spend a good amount of time defending conservative causes too - they just don't get attacked for that work. Overall, their goal is defending the Bill of Rights from being watered down.

American Civil Liberties Union.
They dont want peoples rights to be infringed on. One group can not force another to live a certain way. The religious nut bags in this country cant have everything their way.
