Diamonds are extremely hard and if it can scratch most objects (including glass) without damaging itself, its probably real. Also, if you've ever looked at a real diamond under intense light, almost any type of cut will reflect the stone as extremely brilliant and reflects a spectrum of colors.

Diamonds are the hardest mineral found on the earth. It forms deep under neath the earth in sub crustal iron magnesium magmas, which is ferried to the surface in volcanic lavas. Since it can survive the volcanic lava it will scratch glass, glass will not scratch the diamond. Diamonds are so hard it will scratch quartz as well.

only a real diamond cuts glass. if it's in jewellery, however, this probably won't get you very far cos you can't get the tip out without breaking the rest. take it to a jeweller's, they have the magnifying glasses and the expertise to decide.

a diamond will throw rainbows when it's in the sun, but you won't actually see a rainbow in the stone itself. cz will throw rainbows and you will seea rainbows in the stone (when it is in the sun).
If that's confusing, ask a jewler and they will be able to tell right away

the jeweler has a hand held device that sends some sort of signal or light into the stone to determine if its real.
