Do I understand that your computer cannot find chkdsk (the NT/2000/XP version of ScanDisk)? Does it continue to boot after the error message?

Some bootleg copies of Windows do not include this utility. If your OS is legal, then the system32 folder has been corrupted. This could be caused by some form of malware (run a virus scan and something like Rootkit Revealer) or by physically damaged sectors on the drive itself. Are any other files unretrievable?

If you have the original system disk, boot the computer from it (you may have to change the boot devise order in BIOS) and allow it to repair your OS intallation if it will. Otherwise, you will probably have to try to retrieve and back up your user files, format the hard drive and reinstall Windows.

Not sure how competent you feel you are, wolfie, so I'd suggest taking it to a reputable local tech -- someone who won't just scrag the drive (wiping out your files) or just try to sell you a new hard drive without looking at your machine. But do the backups yourself (if your machine has a CD/DVD writer). Having the tech do it will cost, by the hour. You could possibly spend as much repairing this machine as it would cost to buy a new one.

Use xp disk as you would to do a normal install at the instalation screen pick repair windows leave file system as it is this will re install windows but leave your files as they are on the computer
all that will not be available are any updates that you installed due to yourwindows being back to its original install DONOT pick the change file system or your drive will be auto formatted that is a clean install that destoys all on the hard drive you will still need your serial number to reinstall and your corrupt file system is back to its original state

First, open your browser, go to Tools, Internet Options, General Tab, go to Delete Cookies, Delete Temp files, clear history, then, do a Defragmentation... then reboot and that should help the speed pick back up..
