most of the public signs at the train stations and subways are bilingual. A large number of the population speaks at least some English, and the ones in the hotels are fluent.

HOWEVER.. if you go over as the typcial Loud Obnoxious American Tourist, you will find a chilly reception. The Japanese people are very reserved, unflinchingly polite and extremely touchy about people coming into THEIR country and acting like they should change to suit their whims.

Go, treat the locals with respect, dress conservatively and at least TRY to communicate with them in their native tongue and you will have a great time.

Actually, Japan is not a very language friendly country. Harajuku and Shinjuku are both very busy station. However, only certain stations was upgraded with English lately. It is always best to bring a map around in English, and passers by can understand and explain to you by drawing the directions for you. It is not easy to pick up Japanese, and it will take some time to understand them.

The prices and menu is in Japanese. Just point your finger on what you desire and pay the bill and dont bother with the language.

Their train station is very complicated, so it is best to plan early and always ask around because one train station can be connected to subways, JRs etc and Japanese will not stop and sympathize on you if you are lost. ( Thats my real life experience )

It can and can't be language friendly. In Tokyo you will be able to read signs written in Romanji/English. Resturants will have alot of Kanji. Try to remember the Kanji for beef, chicken, fish, horsea and all that fun stuff will make eating easier. Alot of people in Tokyo will speak a few words of English. Just remember one work "Nomihodai" One of the best things about Japan is in that word. Japanese love to drink and party with Americans, I have much experience with this and always had a good time.
