Terro is one company's version of boric acid (other companies have very similar products containing boric acid and they are all very good) which is a very effective ant killer because it attracts worker ants. They sip on it and since it takes a while to kill them they have time to get back to the colony and feed some to the queen. Once the queen gets enough and she dies it's like cutting the "brain" out of the colony. (There are a few species that can make another queen. If you see the activity stop and a month later it starts again, put the terro down again.) Boric acid is very safe to use in cupboards and around food so you can put it where the ants are.

Terro also came out with a new product this past spring. It's boric acid in a granule that you can spread around the foundation for a perimeter treatment. Then you can kill most of them and the queen before many get into your house.

And finally, nothing beats a couple of tubes of caulk to fill any cracks or holes in the foundation where ants can get in. This is a permantent, don't worry about the anymore, solution.
