Keeping in mind that I'm a graduate student studying mythology, which makes this answer make sense...
It's the great connector. I love, absolutely love, seeking out the connections from one culture to the next within mythology. Aside from that, it's also an amazing look at human culture--understand a people's mythology and religion, and you understand the people.

Sociologist believe that Myth is the most real truth in a society. I believe that is true. Long before we had science take the magic out of rainbows, we had myth telling us of how they got there in the first place. Personally I would rather hear about how the rainbow is the messenger of a god or the seal of a promise than to think it is all light and water.
