Yes it is called reality! They will have to be able to make their own way in this not so pretty world one day and the more they know of it [with your guidance and input] the better they will be able to handle it.

I don't have any idea what social or volunteer work you're referring to, but a dose of reality never hurt anyone, it may turn their stomachs, but it won't hurt 'em.
