I lost the software for it years ago. Normally it plugs into the printer slot but I tried that and nothing seems to work. I have asked at computer stores but they said the will charge me over $100 JUST to look at it!!
Any ideas?

It sounds like the parrellel port is malfuntioning, the other 2 reasponces are correct, but check in the Control Panel under System, and in the hardware tab, Device Manager, under either printers or ports, see if there is a yellow question mark, if so, disable the device, then reconnect the backpack device, and finally restart the computer, this will force the Plug and Play program to see the port and then if so the device on the port, but download any new software first, place in a file and if asked when the computer reboots refer to that file.

It sounds to me like you have one of two problems. The first is a faulty file storage device. If this is not the case, then you probably need a driver for the device. Look up the make and model number on Google or find the original software from the device.
Download and install the driver and you should be up and running.

Check the manufacturer's web site. They may have the software available as a download.
