The battleship H.M.S. Dreadnought was launched in 1908. It had so many innovative features that every other battleship on the ocean became out of date.

Henceforth, every new battleship was made to H.M.S. Dreadnought specifications and those type of battleships became known as 'dreadnoughts'; the old fashioned battleships that soldiered on (or sailored on!) kept the name 'battleships', or 'pre-dreadnoughts'.

After the First World War, dreadnoughts became known as battleships, as by then, all of the old fashioned battleships would have been scrapped.
