There are many trains going to Surat. All train from Bombay Central Station go to Surat but some may not stop. Flying Rani Comes to mind. Surat is only 120 miles from Bombay due north along the coast, line runs 2 to 3 miles inland parallel to west coast of India.
Other information is mostly good.
I suggest you get on the train at Bombay Central Station. All trains start at this station on Western railways line. Some stop at Dader and Boriwerli. Virar and Vasai were considered far suburbs. This is true only if you are not in far suburbs.
Some of the most convenient trains do not allow passengers to Surat they are long distant train they stop at Surat to pick up passengers. Trick is to buy ticket for next allowable station but get off at Surat. If you must do this due to time constrains, make sure train stops in Surat to pick up other passangers so you can get off.
Have a pleasant trip to Surat.
PS
There may be bus services to Surat also worth checking it may be under ST( State Transport Air Conditioned buses). Recommand traveling by First Class. Bus or train.
