As a Salopian and a Town fan, I know this:
It's as another comment states, the land was communal recreational area, I think it had a band stand and the like for people to go and relax by the river at the weekends, maybe even a fairground. Then, in 1909 The Shrewsbury corporation bought the land and leased it to the club. The club bought the ground in 1959 for a cost of £6,750. Obviously, because of the fun and happy area that it was (and still is when we win!) the name of the ground is The Gay Meadow

lol i accturaly know this as i was studing this for geography, it is called gay medow as it use to be a field in like 1911 it was then rented of the local council un till 1960 ish when it was brought by the football club they are now thinking about moving or they were
