Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. We all find different things cool. I hate overdesigned websites. The content is the thing.

there is an old saying in web design. it's called the k.i.s.s. method "keep it simple stupid"!
this simply means the simpler your page the more browsers, browser versions and computer platforms it will work with.
a plain looking web site with lots of helpful info is way better and will get more hits than an uninformative pretty site will. the trick is to find a place in the middle of that.
i'm sure you think that every possible subject has already been written about many tmes over. even if that were true the more we have of a certain subject the easier the info is to find when you need it. besides who knows maybe yours will be more informative than the others are and will make all of them obsolete.
i hate to say this (i wish they would take that junk off the net) but sex sites get the most hits. chat sites are probably number two.
don't use under construction signs on your site if you want everyone to take you seriously. they are the true sign of a beginner.
don't say i'm sorry my site doesn't look good right now. instead fix it right then and there and you won't need to. don't procrastenate. another sign of a beginner.
don't use a lot of unnecessary images. just enough to emphasize your text. most people are still using a 56kb dialup connection and lots of images will take forever to download on their computer. they will want to hang a person with 20 photos on a page. three or four are enough if they aren't to large in size.
don't put too much on a page. if people have to scroll down too far they will ignore your page and move on.
don't use large music files such as wav or mp3 for background music. again people with dialup will want your head for that.
if you use videos put a link to them on a subpage so that the people that do want to view them can. don't put them on the main pages so most can view your pages without waiting for them to load on a slow dialup connection.

If a website is 'cool' it is, almost by definition, a bad website. A 'cool' website will have a black background, with neon green blinking, scrolling text.
Now buy a website design book, and learn how to make a GOOD website.

A Nice Sized Font for Headings
A handful of colours not loads and loads
Not too much writing on one page (too much writing puts me off reading, because their looks loads to read and its all squashed up) Definite put off.
Pictures - but not too many and not piled together.
