I'm pretty sure that you HAVE TO HAVE diet coke and menthos, but hey if you have like $5 try both.

The Methos and Diet Coke reaction does NOT depend on the product being Diet Coke. In fact ANY beverage with disolved CO2 will work. The reaction level, however, MAY be different depending on what you use. This is NOT a chemical reaction as most people believe. In fact it has to do with physics. It has to do with nucleation. The rough surface on the menthos allows CO2 bubbles to form as they come out of solution. Without this rough surface to allow for bubble formation, the CO2 will remain disolved in the liquid MUCH longer. There are other factors which will affect the release rate and they include the composition of the liquid (which is a chemical attribute, affecting the PHYSICAL process), and temperature. A warmer diet coke will react more explosively than a cold one. While I cannot say 100% for sure, I beleive the reason that regular coke reacts less violently than diet coke has to do with the sugar content increasing the CO2 retention in the solution. Regardless, this reaction can also be made with other items also. Try an equal volume of table salt (to that of the Mentos you use) and repeat the experiment. I have not tried (but intend to try) other items that have a rough surface allowing for offgas nucleation.

The long and the short of it is that different liquid with disloved CO2 may react at different levels of violence depending on thier ability to maintain CO2 in solution, but brand has NOTHING to do with it....

If you are looking for a similar type thing... When liquids are brought down to freezing, the liquid in the bottle appears as a liquid. if you strike the bottle, ice builds immeadiately. Ice crystals need a surface to form on (like the bubbles offgasing the the menthos experiment). Striking the bottle causes bubbles to form and the crystals can grow. In a liquid with CO2, when you open the bottle, the bubbles formed by the offgassing of the CO2 allow the ice to form on them.... I am not sure of exactly what temperature you need to bring the liquid to in order to do this, but I have experienced this many times - of course with beer - and, of course not in Grade 10 (??? ;-) )

i watched the mythbusters show about that. The thing is...it needs like these little craters that are in the mentoes candy. if you were to really look at a piece of mentoes there are a ton of holes that are in it. that causes the carbonation to just go insane cuz there's a place for more to be pushed out. and as long as the cola is carbonated i believe it's still good.

You can use any soda with carbination and sodium benzoate.
You do need to use mentos. It has to do with the gelatin, gum arabic, and the grooves on the candy itself. The bubbles in the carbination collect in the grooves of the candy surface and as it falls, they gather quickly, and the reaction with the chemicals causes the fountain to be huge. I've also heard that Lifesavers also has a reaction, but I've never witnessed it.

Nope doesn't have to be Diet coke, almost any cola will work. And most confectionaries will cause soda to fizz.

it doesnt have to be diet coke but apparently the artifical sweeteners in diet fizzy drinks give a better reaction.
