Because Hitler told people what they wanted to hear. Germany was in the dump after WWI. He promised everyone a strong, independent, powerful, financially stable Germany. He didn't start out with the ethnic cleansing platform.

Once he was in power, he convinced enough people that the Jews were the reason that Germany was in the trouble that it was. Many believed him, and others were just too afraid to speak out against him. Those that did oppose him were sent to the ovens as well, so you can understand why very few spoke out.

look, after WWII it was decided by the allies that what Hitler did was wrong!!! In history great Emperors like Cesar, Napoleon, Stalin, or Nations like the US, the Brits, the Spaniards /Conquistadores in the Americas etc. all started wars and/or killed people by the zillions...and committed genocide as well!!! - which does not excuse Hitlers crimes at all!! But still it should be seen that way and be realized that Hitler was not the only person in history that inherited a bad reputation to a nation.
People these days followed the Nazi-System because a) were forced to - like the Soldiers or b) because there was no real alternative for the Dictatorship.
Too bad that there still are Neonazi-followers all over the world, especially in the US...you may find their webpages easily in the internet.

The Nazis rose to power when Germany was crumbling under huge inflation, that resulted from the compensations the Germans were forced to pay after WWI.
When the Nazis took control of Germany they used fear and propaganda to ensure that they will not be removed from power.
Until the Middle of the WWII the Germans believed they have become invincible, since until 1941 they won everywhere, only when they started losing, in north Africa, the eastern front, there was beginning of rebellion, but the rebels failed and were killed.

in no way am i comparing bush and blair to hitler, but they are both leaders of countries and got into power by a few lies and deceit so thats the following part.

afterwards he took his time instilling hatred into the whole country for jews and outsiders. it was easy for him to control everything after that, making out he was the only one who could save the father land.

hitler didn't start ww2, imagine what it would've been like if he hadn't been so arrogant and left poland alone? could've bidede his time and got stronger taking other countries which didnt have protection contracts like britain & poland....scary huh?

There are many people who will simple follow a person with charisma and not stop to think for themselves. Many people are willing to suspend their own limited belief systems in favor of a strong apprearing person telling them: this is what is right, just follow my orders...

Hitler only did 2 things wrong

1. Start WW2

2. Holocaust

If not for those 2 I feel that he would have been noted as one of the great leaders of the 20th century. Instead he is a horse's butt.
