What was your plan and how did you become successful? Thank you very much for sharing. I am a case manager and find it difficult at times to motivate some folks. I want to do all I can to help them become successful and would appreciate some ideas from persons who were in this position.

wow I am glad to hear that you realy care a lot of the workers in your field I do not think care so much so befor I say anything let me say GOOD FOR YOU!!! I think thayt there is a lot more help to get people on the right track I think most everything to get them there is available but the workers need to take the time to get to know what each pearson needs to get it done(like you seem to be doing) each one of us is different. for me it was not an option in 1995 my fiance who was supporting me and my daughter died and welfair would not help me I had to get out there and find a job at the time it was hard and I was real mad at the welfair system but fact of the matter was if they would have easily made it available for me thats where I would have ended up instead of working and building my self esteim especially at a time where I was going through a lot anyway with david dead and all it would have been so easy for me to slip into some deep depresion it was better to keep myself going that way sometimes you just have to be tuff and say no so that they have to do it for themselves but do not leave it at that give them what they need to do it as well for example if they need child care help them with that and take the time to explain exactly what they need to do it is scary if you have no idea what you are doing and that can set them back. if they need gas $ give it to them training give it to them all of the things are there to help them but they do not know about them or know how to get them, I would say the best thing you could do for them is care and it seems that you do thanks! and do not make it to easy for them to stay on welfair my thought was if i am going to work so hard to be on it why not work as hard to stay off of it.

I am formerly homeless and was never on welfare, but I've thought about it a lot. When someone receives benefits, it seems to be all or nothing. You get a job and lose all the benefits. Often those jobs are minimum wage to $6/hour and are not enough to pay child care. Is there a graduated system that will pay child care but lose the AFDC so the work someone doesn't penalize them? Maybe it's only my state that does that though (SC).
Another thing you could try is some kind of group conference. If they have legitimate problems with going to work, you can easier see a pattern, and if they're making excuses, the rediculousness of them will be appearent.

I was on welfare for about a year after my husband and I split up. It was in CA and I couldn't get him to pay child support so I got on and was very successful. It was called welfare to work program. I could either spend 30 hours a week looking for work or I could go to school. So I choose school. They paid for my schooling and gave me food stamps (plenty) and I qualified for free childcare, and got cash aid. My schooling was only $750.00 but they also helped me with my uniform. So I went to beauty school full time and an order for child support was issued with wadge garnishment. It really worked I am no longer on aid, food stamps, or medical. And it only took about 1 year. I believe the program worked for me because they gave me choices to be successful. It was kinda' a no nonsense program and I was responsible for my own actions, l had to maintain attendance as well as credits and I had to check in with my worker every two weeks and if I didn't then my aid would have been on the line. I graduated and went on to work full time and still got food stamps for the next six months... which was a big help. I think it only works for people who really don't want to be on assistance. There are alot of people who will get away with free money as long as you allow them to.

People just have to understand that as long as you're scared to try you are destined to continue to fail. They have to understand that they deserve so much more and that they are smart and stong enough to stand on the to feet they've been given. And most of all they need to be shown that there is no dollar like an earned dollar. I recieved assistance for six years and now i'm working hard everyday, yes at the end of the day i'm tired but I feel so much better about myself because I DID IT. AND I OF PROUD OF MEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!
