I'm not kidding: George W. Bush wants to ban somatic cell nuclear transfer research, which would create medically precious stem cells by moving patients' own skin cells into the nucleii of donated eggs. This is not the cloning of babies we're talking about -- no Frankenbabies would be created in the process. It's simply the creation of stem cell lines tailored to each individual's genetic makeup, which could be used to help people walk again, recover from strokes, battle cancer, Parkinson's disease and lead healthier lives in ways we can't even yet imagine. But Bush will have none of that. With this policy, any researcher, health care provider or patient using such a treatment would have to fork over up to a million dollars and spend up to ten years in jail. How petty and backward-minded?

Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer (SCNT) or therapeutic cloning involves removing the nucleus of an unfertilized egg cell, replacing it with the material from the nucleus of a "somatic cell" (a skin, heart, or nerve cell, for example), and stimulating this cell to begin dividing. Once the cell begins dividing, stem cells can be extracted 5-6 days later and used for research. Where do the fertilized egg and the murder part fit in??? Please explain!

Have you ever attempted a reasoned debate with somebody on a matter of belief or faith. The problem with trying to fight beliefs with reason is that their belief never required petty things like proof or empirical evidence. Bush got into office twice on the Christian ticket, that's the scary thing about these people. They can set policy with no concern for reality; let God sort it out. Furthermore, I wonder why you're surprised that we're getting poor biomedical policy from a man who couldn't explain how cellular mitosis or respiration works. Even though he has absolutely no credentials in this area, for some reason we think he's the right man to make decisions for it.

Two more years Michelle (at most) and the long nightmare will finally be over.

And those who tell you nothing has come from fetal stem cell research are full of it. Researchers the world over (except us) are focused on that as the area of highest promise. The reason is that fetal stem cells can differentiate into any kind of cell in the body.

Bush is not sending them to jail. He is just stopping federal funding for stem cell research. Privately funded programs will continue as planned.

What else did you expect from the religious right wing nutcases that are running our country.

From the time that they are little children they are taught that anything that even remotely has a connotation of contradicting the bible is evil and as such they are brainwashed into not being able to think with logic or reason.

"Reason is the greatest enemy that faith has; it never comes to the aid of spiritual things, but -- more frequently than not -- struggles against the divine Word, treating with contempt all that emanates from God." ~ Martin Luther

Some people consider a fertilized egg to be a human life.

Their reasoning: Why is the life of the person we are striving to heal more important than the human life you will kill when doing this research with the fertilized egg.?

It all depends on how you view that fertilized egg
Human Life? or Useful Tissue?

DUH-bya is a rube and doesn't understand the intricacies of the scientific community. His tunnel vision and shear stupidity are reminiscent of Germany in the 1930's as the Nazi party was gaining momentum. He belongs in prison for treason and crimes against humanity. He is anti-science, anti-environment, and anti-common sense.
