There are more animals than people. More of them are working their way up the cylce of transmigration to become people.

Just think about if for a secound seriously. Also If you truely try and grasp the complexity and scope of this one univers we have here there probably has been plenty of planets that have thrived with life only to be destoryed and also Nowhere did it ever say that a soul can only be in one place at a time like i just dont get it and also i think its entirly possible that we are all of the same conciousness that even if the numbers grew what difference does it make. Buddhism is to good and too complex for population growth.

Karma affects all beings, even Gods, Demons, etc. So depending on their Karmic 'results' they are allocated to a plane of existence as any possible being.
It's all supposed to fit in and it does. Perhaps the karma of many entities balance out to humanity.
There are of course other factors other than Karma that have effects, but one factor at a time clears things out.
Note that Buddhism (theravada) disproves the existence of a soul. Reality is threefold.

I studied Buddhism for a while and I would have to say
that they would likely answer: It is possible to split into more than one entity.
you are making a the assumption that, one's energy most reincarnate as one entity.
