It's hard to answer a question like this but for all the people mentioning the weapons/ammo manufacturers, it's true their business goes up during times of war. However, anyone can buy their stocks so therefore we ALL can potentially make money like they do if we want to take advantage. Also, if we are looking at the topic from this aspect alone, ie. the production of the necessary tools of war, there is also a trickle down affect that takes place. The company I work for is just a small general machine shop but one of our customers makes armor plating for the government and we make tooling for them. So, as their business grows due to the war, our business grows too (at least with that one customer), this helps to improve the bottom line at my company and then there's more money to hand out in the form of bonuses and incentives to me and the other 110 employees who work where I do. Then, we, in turn, have more money to spend in our neighborhoods on new cars, TV's, computers, clothing, dining out, etc. So I guess unless the war takes place in your neighborhood, anyone can and potentially does gain.

In the short term, 5 years or so, the economy can be jogged out of the duldrums, patriotism swells, investments in the markets increase, everything looks good on the surface. But that cannot be sustained. After the initial groundswell the bubbles start to burst.
In the long run a long drawn out war is a drag on the economy. At that point only the defense industry comes out a winner.

It'll end some day. It's going to be a long time though. There will be peace when we kill out terrorists that want us dead, that wish to oppress the innocent. The war on terror isn't going to end over night. It's gonna take a very long time. Oh, and btw, the Iraqis have benefited. They no longer have to worry about Saddam, and his henchmen raping, torturing, and murdering their families just because they don't want to go along with his dictatorial policies.

The oldest war currently being fought is between the Arabs and Jews. Since most others have lasted only a few years, it can be hard to know who benefits.

Well, the Iraqis definitely benefit. They are no longer in fear for their lives from the brutal hand of Saddam, and his thugs. They are now free to vote in their own FREE elections. We benefit, because we're fighting terrorists where they breed in the Middle East instead of here on our own soil. You're right, this war is going to be going on for a long, long time, but it's worth it. There is a high cost to pay for freedom.

The military-industrial complex. Someone has to supply all that equipment, those weapons, that ammunition, and that someone is a collection of various arms manufacturers that get paid large sums of money for their equipment and then get handed more money to develop even newer and better ways of killing people.
Every Congressional district is in some way tied directly into the military-industrial complex so as to be able to influence the voting of every Representative and Senator because they provide jobs, and jobs means happy voters which means re-election.
President Eisenhower warned against the military-industrial complex gaining power in America, and I leave it to your own judgement to decide if they have it or not.

Obviously the people in control of the government, if they get to keep using that so-called war (even if there is no actual legal war) as an excuse for them grabbing as much power as they can.
By focusing our attention on the conflict, and pointing our how dangerous the world is, they can justify their actions in a way that would never be allowed if people weren't so scared.
And that's the essence of terrorism. Controlling a population through fear and intimidation, to get what you want.

The Military industrial complex and the Government. I'd suggest you read Orwell's 1984.
