i used to have free internet access from an unsecured wireless network, and now it has security.

is it possible to hack into the network as an average computer user? I have a powerbook and i was just wondering if it was easy or if there are any applications written to do it?

(note, i already have a new internet connection thus won't actually do it, i was just wondering if its possible by an average person and not a techy, as i've just put security onto my network as well)

WEP is easily hackable. It is low security, basic protection. You'll find planty of site that will explain how to find the passphrase.

So if you want to protect your network, go with a WPA or WPA2 key

Yes, WEP is actually easy to hack. The key code is send frequently, and it only takes a couple of programs and a little patience to hack.

WPA is better security to use for wireless, and I always use MAC address control and I don't broadcast the access point SID either. It makes it a little harder to get in.

There are quite a few Linux applications that can analyse the data streams and reveal the key for WEP. I haven't seen any Windows software that can achieve this, maybe someone will point to a site for the software.

WPA is much more secure, combine it with MAC address filtering, and it would be near impossible to get to your router.
