It seems that if you don't want them recording your every purchase and decide not to get a card, they are charging you more for items. Am I seeing this right? It seems that we would be getting charged more if we want to keep our privacy?
I understand it helps the stores to spot buying trends, but if that is all they wanted why don't they just give them out without asking for all of our personal information beforehand?

I guess what I am getting at is why are they able to charge you more if you don't get involved.

Yes. A voluntary invasion of our privacy.
Who knows what they're doing with the data.
The prices charged, without one, is totally ridiculous.
The alternative is to shop elsewhere, if possible.

It is if you're honest when you fill out the form. I have the cards, but none of the stores has any real info about me.

The one that really irritates me is when you buy something in a store and the cashier won't even ring you up unless you give some kind of phone number. I always say 555-1212. When they complain that its obviously a fake number, I tell them to make one up that they like better.

well, it's a marketing tool. giving you lower prices for joining would be like giving you a share of their advertising budget. i don't mind the cards, if they save me money ... just like i wouldn't mind paying lower prices instead of watching advertising. if you don't want to help their marketing, then don't join. it's your choice, nobody makes you join. my pet peeve is marketing for electronics products, where they offer you mail-in rebates. i refuse to buy products with mail-in rebates, because i think it's a terrible marketing technique ... but that's my choice.

When you get one of those membership cards, you are supposed to put down your name and address. I emphasize, "supposed to". Figure it out.

I agree wholeheartedly. There's no reason to fill databases with my selections of eggs, butter, and pantyhose.
