I want to learn from scratch. Suggest good websites. How long 'll it take to complete learning(I'm a slow reader). Also, tell me the DB softwares in use. How about Job vacancies?

Application developer or Database Administration? For both go for Oracle. Strictly no other RDBMS. 90% of global RDBMS market is in the clutches of Oracle. When u learn oracle u can work with others on your own. I can work with Oracle, MySql, Postgresql but learned only oracle. For both straightly go for OCP(Oracle certified professional) Application Developer / DBA. There's good demand for oracle App developers. But Database applications are terribly boring in the long run(So it appeared to me). DBA is nice. But there's another word of caution. US companies do not recruit DBA for onsite job from India. I've seen none. Probably there's some restriction by US government. I assume u want to be a serious DBA. Not a DBA who runs database scripts written by others without understanding anything, monitors and escalates, for $3500 - 35% tax.

I suggest you to go for Oracle 9i or SQL server.
There are lots of opprtuinities for DBAs.
But just dont go on this suggestions please have some practical search for these things...after all its the question of your career!
