Wireless is the easiest way.

1. Purchase a "wireless router" from your local computer store. Netgear and Linksys are popular brands and they cost less than $100. This device will physically plug into your cable modem.

2. Each computer in the house will then need some type of wireless network adapter. Newer computers have this technology built in. If yours doesn't have it then you can buy a wireless antenna that plugs into a USB device. Netgear and Linksys again are popular brands.

Note: You can buy "802.11b" wireless stuff that is cheaper, or "802.11g" that is more expensive but transmits further. I would go with the "g" to ensure good connectivity.

(Without wireless, you need to physically connect each computer to a router which can be done if they're all in the same room as the cable modem, or if your house has wiring in the walls to the other rooms)

Assuming you have DSL, you can A. Either come straight out of your modem with another CAT5e cable to the other computer, if you have another place for it, sometimes this will work and auto configure, or either B. You need a router. This is the best way. Have your phone line plugged into your dsl modem, and the CAT5e cable running from your modem to the computer. Then, you need another one going from the modem to the router to link them together. Then all you have to do is get a cable long enough to reach from the router, to the other computer, plug it in, and go. Make sure your network connections is turned on, and you can turn file and printer sharing off in your network options.

If you have dsl or broadband, use a wireless router. Make sure that both computers have a wireless network card so they can accept the signal from the router. If you have dial-up, i would recommend updating your internet access first.

you need a router
one cable goes from the modem to the router (into the internet port) at this point it depends if you want to go wireless or not.
if you go wired-one cable goes from one computer into the #1 port on the router-one cable goes from the other computer to the #2 port on the router-and thats it
if you go wireless you will need at least one wireless adapter
you can go wired with the one nearest the router and modem
and wireless with the other one-if this is how you want to do it make sure you get a wireless router.
good luck

If you don't want to share files, a simple hub should do the job.
