As she has been smoking for such a long time, it will obviously be hard for her to break the habit. Give her some information from the hospital on what damage can be caused by smoking. Talk to her openly of how it is making you feel. Granted it is her choice in the end, but seeing and hearing how it is affecting you may help her to meet you half way and try to kick the habit, give her plenty of support and encouragement should she choose to do so

Hope all ends well

There's more than one way to quit smoking, depending on your personality type. But do realize it's your Mom, whom you love, not any old friend and not yourself, so do take care.

First, assess your relationship with Mom. Do you communicate much? If talking is O.K., then fine, make some tea and have a talk. Keep your head cool. After all, if you loose your head, you are proving to Mom that non-smokers are uncool (and need a ciggy)! LOL. If you are an empathetic listener, who knows, you might even learn the root cause of Mom's dependence on cigarettes.

Does she have other ways to beat stress, other than lighting up? Hobbies, perhaps?

Does Mom exercise? Or do you do so? If you do, you can lead by example without the need to even use your mouth. Let Mom see first-hand how a healthy, fit lifestyle not only makes you feel better, but it makes you look better too (hint, hint).

What about me? Let’s just keep it short and say – the thing that made me finally quit cigarettes (after half a decade), was, unfortunately – my discovery that my body really couldn’t handle cigarettes. Sure I did relish the nicotine rush – but my health and fitness is my life, I decided. Sure, I still love my coffees, - but nicotine – that’s history.

A last note: Always replace old habits with a life-affirming good habit. Never leave a vacuum.

She's been hiding because she doesn't want to be givng you a bad example, she knows that smoking is bad that's why she's been hiding! I would be a little nasty and maybe this will give her a fright like buying a pkt of cigarettes and leaving it half used on a table thus giving her a shock and when she asks you if you've been smoking just reply that the same shock she's got you have already experienced it when you discovered that she was smoking.

Confront her, and tell her the truth. If you make joking hints/suggestions or start coughing or something like that it will get laughed off, but if you sit down and talk seriously about it it should work. Tell her you are upset that she smokes, that this makes you concerned for her health and constantly worried. Tell her you love her and that you want her to be around as soon as possible, and loosing her to smoking would be devistating to you. If asking if she smoked as hard it sounds like this may be harder, but this is the best I got.
Buena Suerte.

I used to be a smoker, but when I became a Christian, I thought I would stop. No...! I struggled of and on with the problem, then one night I realised I was trying by myself, instead of asking God to help me deal with the problem. I kept thinking of the harm I was doing to my family, not to myself, but when you belong to God, your body becomes a temple for the Holy Spirit, so nothing impure should defile it. I wanted to stop after I realised that, but couldn't.

No, I am no religious crackpot. I am a born-again-Christian, who has given over my life to Christ. So, what I did was pray to Jesus to help me stop smoking, and the craving went overnight, and I haven't had a cigerette yet, and that's about 15-20 years ago. Now I can't stand the smell of cigerette's.

I'm not being funny but how could you of missed the smell of smoking, and if she wants to smoke then let her she is a grown woman. i would never even think about getting my dad to stop smoking. she knows the risks and if she wants to carry on there isn't alot you can do, my grandad recently passed away dure to cancer from smoking and my mum tried bribing me to stop smoking by saying 'you know what ur grand-kids would be going through if u die' and yeah it makes me think but I'm still smoking. I'm never gonna give up unless i feel ready to, or till i fall pregnant

How about you? have you experimented with addictive chemicals? Nicotine is addictive, but legal. I too have been addicted to it since an early age. I've quit a few times, but started again later. There is nothing you can say. Get some good info on kicking the addiction, and no platitudes on how it can be done.

If you reason with her she's probably not gonna listen.

As a last straw ask her to take a life insurance policy of half a million dollars and make you the beneficiary. Sometimes such cold and callous statements will be more effective than caoxing her.

You never saw her smoke or smelled it on her in all these years? Don't give her a hard time. My mother smoked, too and I hated it. Your mom knows it's bad and telling her over and over is not going to help. Trust me on this. The more I bugged my mom, the more she smoked! Go to http://www.philipmorrisusa.com/en/home.asp

Send it to her email or print it out and leave it for her. Don't say anything just leave it for her to see.

I wore them patches for a day and ended up in Casualty with a broken nose, couldn't see where I was going and walk into a lamp post, I think I'll try the Pill next, if they have one for men.
