Was the game you put in a PS2 game or a PSX game? A lot of PS2s, mine included, have a problem playing PSX games and the PS2 games that come on CDs instead of DVDs (you can tell because they're purple on the bottom). This is because they're lighter and rattle in the tray instead of spinning like they should. I've read (and found by trying it myself) that placing two parallel, identically sized strips of scotch tape to the top of the disc, on either side of the hole, helps to weigh them down just enough to make them sit in the tray without rattling, but do this at your own risk (there is a slight chance that you could pull the tape off too quickly later and remove a the top layer of data on the disc, though this has never happened to me).
If the game was a PS2 DVD, try what the other posters have said: make sure the disc is clean, and try cleaning the PS2's lens. All you need to clean the lens is a standard CD lens cleaner, which you can get from any electronics store for cheap. It looks like a regular CD but it has tiny brushes on the bottom which gently wipe away any dust on the lens as it spins. (However, if your PS2 is having problems reading PSX games/CDs, as mentioned above, the cleaner disc might rattle in the tray. Worth a try, anyway.)
Otherwise, I have no idea. You might just need a new drive. Sony, like it or not, tends to use pretty shoddy parts in their systems. Hopefully that changes with the PS3 (it had better work flawlessly for what it's going to cost).

Your ps2 has a knackered laser guide arm. There is nothing wrong with the disk drive, the laser or your games. This can be a very cheap fix it only costs me around £3 to fix that fault which is only the cost of the part.
You can buy the part from ebay. I recommend the seller consolewerks-co-uk as he provides easy to follow step by step fitting instructions. He may be very slightly more expensive than some of the other sellers but his fitting instructions make up for it. If you dont fancy sorting it out yourself then contact me on ps2repairs@hotmail.co.uk to arrange a fix.
hope this helps

this may be a uncomplicated challenge with early variations of the PS2. It ability the Laser lens is broken. it would nevertheless have the skill to study some discs, yet in comparison to Microsoft Sony won't replace the defective instruments. it would be greater decrease priced to purchase a sparkling PS2 or in case you could locate the money for it merely get a PS3 than to restoration it.

Its one of two things.
1. Your disk is faulty, if you rub it with a cloth and alcoholic solvent, or even just a cloth slightly dampened with water, it could rectify the problem. If it persists your game is just broken, nothing much you can do, except use your new toy as a frisbee :-P
2. In may not be the disk at all, option 2 is its your computer yourself that holds the problem. A scratched lens is usually the case. Theres nothing much that can be done unless you get it repaired.

Try cleaning it... If that doesn't work, than you might need to find a new drive for it...
