A friend has told me that in continental Europe (ie not UK), thong swimwear is acceptable in public swimming pools (not just the beach). Is this really true? Is it acceptable for both men and women?

Thongs are perfectly acceptable in Europe for both women and men but it's not as popular for men anymore. The thong fad for men has passed. Even women without the perfect body wear thongs, but it is not so attractive.

They have a very adult attitude about the human body. Thongs or often as not Nothing at all is usually acceptable in most european public pools.

Continental Europe is 25 EU countries and then some... There's more difference in attitude and law between, say, The Netherlands, Lithuania and Cyprus as there is between NYC, Circleville, Ohio and Salt Lake City... I would suggest you narrow your question down a bit.

In most cases. And remember, for women wearing ONLY a thong is usually okay. A lot of women have stopped wearing tops. I wish America wasn't so prudish.

In the UK, no. For men, shorts are good, trunks if you have the body (although not if you don't), but not a thong.
