If the service is good which it usually is I tip 20%. If not I go with 15% and tell the waitress or waiter that if the service was better they would make better tips.
The exception is my favorite neighborhood restaurant/bar where I practically know everyone that walks in the place in additional to the help. The bar maids are young college women some with a small child trying to 'get er done' as Larry would say. I tip them usually anywhere from 25% to 50% depending on my tab. With happy hour you can have six beers and an appetizer and come up with a $10 tab. On those occasions, I give them a $20 and let it go.
Most of them are going to school to become a nurse. So with any luck if I get sick maybe they will be the ones to care for me. You never know.

Yes, but the only reason I think I do tip well is because I used to be a waitress and I remember the nights that it was slow and went home with nothing. So, of course every time I go out I feel guilty if someone doesnt leave enough (or any) money for the waiter/waitress.

I always tip! Usually 15% or more. It all depends, only if the service is up to par, even if the food sucks, or if i see the server is doing his/her best to serve my table and the others while busy and staying courteous they get a tip. If a server is flat out lazy or rude however, I still leave a tip, a small one.......In pocket change: quarters, nickels, pennies, arcade tokens. I worked at Hooters and then some snobby restaurant that actually sucked, so I know how it is.

I am the worlds best tipper. Waitresses and strippers from San Diego to Daytona Beach know me by name.

This is to the "if the service is good" people. How much fault can you put on someone, like a waitress? Its her fault if it takes 45 minutes to get your food? Or is it the chefs? You tip a waitress no matter what. You tip a valet no matter what. You tip a bellman no matter what. You tip a skycab no matter what. You tip a taxi no matter what. If the hotel Im at leaves a note saying who cleaned the room, I leave them a tip.

Yes I do. I usually tip 20-25%, instead of the standard 15%. I used to be a waiter before I started my career, so I know how rough it can be when you work for tips.

I usually double the tax and pay to the closest dollar amount. If the service was great then of course a bigger tip. Waiters and waitress's should not just expect a tip, they should earn it. I want the waitress to look like she doesn't mind taking my order and that is not obvious she hates her job.

I think waiting tables should be a required course in high school. Anyone who has ever been a waiter or waitress knows how demanding and stressful the job can be. People who have experienced this know that tipping well should be a requirement. At least 15% should be left for their service....at least!

I tip according to the type of service.
Bad service - 10%
Fair service - 15%
Good Service - 15% maybe slightly more
Excellent - 20% - 30%

People need to remember that waiters and waitresses depend on their tips for the bulk of their income. However, waiter/waitresses need to remember this when they are taking care of their customers and if they want a good to excellent tip, they need to take good/excellent care of their customers.

Yes. As a former waiter, I feel it extremely important to tip between 20 and 30 percent. If Deserved of course!! and a buck per drink unless with a large group!

I tend to tip very good. I was a waitress for about 5 years, so I know how important tipping is.
