You're walking in a field and the King catches you. He doesn't like you so he is going to kill you. You get one statement. He is going to respond to your statement by agreeing or disagreeing. If he agrees with it, he is going to hang you. If he disagrees with it, he is going to throw you in a pit of fire. There is ONE thing you can say to stay alive. What is it?

This seems to have an obvious solution, but it's not. The statement, "You are going to throw me in a pit of fire," might seem to be the correct answer, but the king can simply agree with the statement, hang me, THEN throw me in a pit of fire. Likewise, saying, "You are not going to hang me," the king can then disagree, hang me, then throw me in a pit of fire for disagreeing.
The correct answer would then have to combine the two. "You are not going to hang me AND you are going to throw me in a pit of fire." If he agrees, then he contradicts himself. Likewise, if he disagrees, then he again will contract himself. Neither of the two choices are then possible.
Of course, logic might be circumvented by a Mad King, to which I would then say, "What's that in the sky?" When he looks up reflexively, I pull his pantaloons down and take off running. :-)

this seems like a ole' riddle to me...for the life of me I can't really figure out the punch line.
It seems as though you would have to ask the king a question or say something that puts him in a dilemma whereby he couldn't agree or disagree... a statement where there's no possibility of affirmation/denial...um? Maybe something like "God is...." or just "Hello"
(I'm really interested in the answer to this one)

He will disagree - then I go on my merry way.
If he agrees - then I'm dead - but at least I have the satisfaction of sticking it to the King.
