If you take a look at the video you will see that there is a mother character which interacts with the singer. If you listen to the album version of the song, you will also notice at the beginning of the song a phone message from a mother-type of character. (ie. wondering where he is, if he's ok. etc. and the voice is of an older woman) the beginning of the song talks about the blocking out thoughts of "you". much of the song is apologetic to in the way that he's saying, "leave me so that you can be better off". He talks about leaving so that "you" can be better. from what I can make of it, it's a song to his mother or perhaps someone who cared deeply for him. He's apologizing for the things he's done and is now realizing that he only causes trouble for her, so he's leaving. He has memories of her but ultimately wants her to forget him so that they can both move on with their lives

I had just had to say that when I heard the song on the radio I thought he was singing about his girlfriend or wife. Thanking her for being there for him through thick and thin. And how he left her so she could finally see what's good for her. But then I saw the video. I just found it odd that he's singing about his mom. I mean, why would you say "Playing movies in my head that make a porno feel like home" if you are talking about your mother? Anyway.... Here are the lyrics.

I think he was an alocoholic or something and he is talking about his mom helping him. I could be completely wrong- but the video seems something like that.
