A friend is offering me his Jeep Cherokee 4.0l for 1500 quid, it's in good condition and would be a cheaper alternative to a Land Rover- but I am worried about fule economy. Would this 4x4 lend itself to an LPG conversion, who should I talk to, and what are the pros and cons of getting this done? Thanks!

Check how much the conversion would cost and then calculate (based on price difference of fuel) how long it would take to recover the expense. Don't forget to also look at the efficiency of one fuel against the other. You may NOT get the same fuel mileage with LPG, AND, you won't have as many places to get fuel!
You may be shocked!

Yes I have a Jeep Cherokee 4.0l I have had them for years and my latest runs on LPG I used get about 22-28 on a run with LPG at 42pl tr I'm basically getting double that!!
The Cherokee's are smaller than a Disco but far superior better handling loads more power very comfy It's like having a 4x4 sports car.
There is no pros's and con's LPG is loads cheaper and it's em missions are load lower.
All you need to decide is wether to have the under slung gas tank with smaller fuel tank or the fuel tank in the boot obviously this does limit the load area but its cheaper option.
And guess what I have one of each for sale!
I sell parts on eBay for Cherokee's just search Jeep Cherokee parts and you'll see me at the top of the page I generally have 4-5 for parts and 2 have LPG conversions check it out or email me.
I will be glad to advise further. my user name is G2 DEK
Regards

We, at Arun Autogas, provide specialist upgrades to your existing car, 4x4 or commercial van so it has two individual fuel systems. The Autogas / lpg conversion allows petrol vehicles to run on either Autogas or petrol controlled by a dashboard switch. This gas - Autogas or LPG - is an environmentally friendly fuel which burns cleanly AND is virtually half the price of petrol. If you've a diesel follow this link

An LPG - Autogas conversion provides a safe, very cheap and environmentally friendly method of transport. The fuel produces very little soot when burnt. To buy on the forecourt it is often 50% cheaper than petrol and even more compared to diesel. This makes your pounds take you twice as far........All without getting rid of your car!

With more than 1400 stations selling LPG in the UK, 220 in the South East alone. It is not surprising that many motorists are switching to use LPG, the cleaner cheaper fuel, today, tomorrow & for the future*.

Arun Autogas are fully certified by the LPG industry's regulatory body to fit several different lpg conversion systems. Some make vehicles exempt of the London Congestion Charge (see congestion charge exempt ). We are primarily agents for Nicholson McLaren Engines' EzSGi, Teleflex GFi2, Necam Koltec GSi and the world leading Impco-BRC Sequent.

We are approved to repair, fit and service the Mercedes Benz "Eco-Fuel", Vauxhall "Dual-fuel", Volvo "Bi-Fuel" and Ford "LPG" factory-fitted systems. Since 2000, we've also been one of the original MG Rover LPG retro-installation centres. During 2005, we converted two Rover 75 MG ZT260's, these are the Ford V8 models that Mr Jeremy Clarkson was very impressed with. See examples of these conversions, at our sister site GasCarCo.com .

When you decide you want an installation you should consider the work & support offered by Arun Autogas the dedicated LPG - Autogas installers covering East & West Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire, Kent and the south of London. We can offer a collection and return service to anywhere in the south east.

The GasCarCo.com website contains more of the information you could require about the LPG installation upgrade process. We recommend that you visit our other website, there in the "Photo Gallery" you will see many examples of our workmanship. And then contact us when you are ready to discuss final details; such as what tank option & when you would like your conversion.

Yes, LPG fuel conversion is a good idea IF you plan on keeping it for a few years and do high(ish) mileage.

An authorised conversion will cost about £2000. And as it halves the running cost - you will have to go through roughly 4000 litres of fuel before it starts paying for itself - that's about 50 full tanks.

(Say £1 a litre petrol, £0.50 LPG for simplistic terms)

Weigh up the fuel you are likely to use against the time you're going to keep the Jeep and see if you will make a saving.

Morrison's supermarkets garages always sell LPG. At the time of writing this, it is 39.9 a litre.Unleaded is 88.9 a litre. This is Greater Manchester area. I watched 2 Range Rovers fill up the other day, 1 on LPG the other on unleaded. One paid £20 and the other £60. You don't get as many miles as unleaded, but at that price who cares.

I believe the Cherokee was sold with a diesel engine for a year, the motor coming from Renault. You might want to research that further.

You probably won't better 17mpg with the 4.0L.
Hope you have checked insurance rates for the jeep.

Our Peugeot does 50mpg (10p/mile) but cost us 10,000 pounds to buy. You will use three times as much petrol as me, paying 30p a mile. So, if you do 10,000 miles a year over three years that is 30,000 miles at 20p extra per mile = 6,000 pounds. You would still be better off than us. (is this maths right?)

And at 1500 it won't depreciate much.

It is a very comfortable vehicle with lots of space, room for sheep in the back, if you are so inclined.

If you are worried about fuel economy, perhaps a Jeep 4.0 is not the best choice? This type of vehicle is notoriously heavy on fuel.

I mean, listen to yourself. You already know it's a bad deal so do not feel you are obligated in any way to buying this gas guzzler.!!!
