The free games that come with XP are pretty lame. Tell her to open up Microsoft Word and write a poem or two, or Paint and draw a picture.

If you have word or similar software you can write and store business letters if you have printer. Staying with letters you can write personal letters and if you have paint pad in software that came with it, than you can jazz up letters by drawing something. Paint pad might be found on accessories. For business you can write and store your resume. Write book articles, short stories.
For fun you can play games that come with XP or buy games depending on what you like to play. There is all kinds of software of you can buy. To get sense of what is out there you can use computer on-line at your local library. Ask friends and family what they think meet their needs for cost. Your daughter might ask teachers for suggestions. She could use it to write and store notes on class, things to remember. It takes time but little by little it starts to come together.
