We dont necessarily need the theory of evolution, but humans love knowledge and want to know why things are. So we create theories to try to come to a better understanding about this complex world in which we live. So any theory with some logic to it will do. When it comes to evelolution they want to try to understand it to predict future possibilities.

That is a rather curious way of phrasing it. the theory of evolution is the best known explanation of the facts. No other theory has come close to explaining the following in a rational, coherent, objective and comprehensive way. the facts cannot include scripture without subjecting scripture to the same rational analysis that all other pieces of evidence must be viewed. Most religious people would fin such an analysis of scripture to be abhorrent. Facts including all ancient written accounts and also include a fossil record and DNA evidence.

No theory is ever "needed" unless your goal is to explain the world around us. If you want to explain the world, you need theories. Science is a great tool because it provides with a way to go about figuring our world in a smart way: we make theories, then figure out clever ways of testing them - that is, we say if this theory is true, then this experiment should turn out like this - and then we perform the test, and if the theory fails, we come up with a new one.

So far evolution has passed all the ways we have thought to test it.

We dont "need" a theory of evolution, in the same way we dont "need" a theory of gravity, or a theory of electromagnetism, or a theory of how disease is spread by germs. Its just an explaination for how things work.
