Maybe someone is using the TV remote or another remote control causing this problem. Today's remotes usually involve line-of-sight operation using infrared beam.

However, other devices may be controlled by radio frequency:

someone within range is using another remote control with the same frequency as your ceiling fan. remotes work through low frequency radio type waves. Another remote you have may be the same frequency or it might be even something like a neighbors garage door opener.

one reason again to stop with all these remotes!!! so many things are electric and so many interact with others! Remove the remotes off these devices now! how hard is it to turn a light switch on?

Better get an electrician in to check your wiring...or a neighbour also has the same type remote control and sets them off inadvertantly...(true, this happened to my best friends with a remote control that controlled the garage roller doors)...
