I am just trying to figure out, how much does it mean in file transfer speed to have a LAN connection of 10 or 100 or 1000 Mbps.

10 megabits equals 1220.7 kilobytes

Bytes are assumed to have 8 bits. Each megabyte is 1000 of those 8 bit kilobytes. If you have 10 megabits per second you have 10,000 kilobits per second. Dividing by 8 to get bytes gives 10000/8 = 1250 kilobytes per second.

Divide the file length in kilobytes by that rate of 1250 kilobits per second [for the 10 Mbps LAN]. If a file is 1250 kilobytes long (just to make the arithmetic in this example easy) then at 1250 kilobytes per second it will take 1 second to download it using that 10 Mbps LAN.

Your theoretical file transfer speed would be1280 KB/s. However, this can NEVER be reached due to protocol overheads.

Note, there is a difference between bps (bits per second) and B/s (bytes per second)

1 byte = 8 bits.

1000 KBytes = 8000 KBits

1000 KBytes = 1 MBytes

10 MBits = 1.250 MBytes

So....
10 MBits = 1250 KBytes

1KB (Kilobyte) = 8 Kb (Kilobits)

As 1 Mb/s actually equals 1024 Kb/s

10 Mb/s = 10240 Kb/s = (10240/8) KB/s = 1280 KB/s

A MB is 1000 KB so 10MB/Sec=10,000KB/Sec
