Depends on the song - some lyrics have a personal resonance for me while others don't.
Back in the late 60s and early 70s, the problem with rock often was that it was difficult to understand/make out the lyrics.
Today, with rap/hip hop, the problem is that you CAN understand the lyrics all too easily.

Yes, they are the most important part of the song for me..the way the singer sings them and the way he shows his passion towards the words comes next...and then the tune and the beat. I could enjoy a song just for the tune, but it wouldnt really mean anything to me unless i liked the lyrics.

It is the beat that catches my attention first, then if I like the song , I will listen to the lyrics. Even if I really like the beat to a song, if they are using profanity, or any derogatory words, I will not listen to it. Of course their are the songs that remind us of good times , places , and the people we love, their lyrics mean so much.

If I can understand the lyrics (as in, if the singer is pronunciating the words clearly), then they mean everything. If I can't understand what the singer is singing, then the lyrics mean nothing and the beat is everything.

Some of them do. Basically they help me remember certain places I have been to or certain moments in my life, funny things, sad things or romantic ones.
I do pay attention to the lyrics and use music whenever I can to express what I feel or let my husband know how much I love him (or hate him) at the moment.

To be honest, I think if you can actually hear the lyrics to a song clearly, it's probably crap! But, having said that, there are some groups whose lyrics are easy to hear AND their songs are kewl to boot!

yes, the lyrics are what provokes my mind to think about things around me, in my past, etc. and how they might relate. It's how the song earns any real meaning to you and your life.

I guess it depends the person. I can listen to a song and never listen to the words. My husband on the other hand...knows the words to most all songs and the message they are trying to get through.
